History of the Collection
On 22nd May 1973, more than 40 years, Budapest Municipal Council approved the establishment of a separate department within the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library. The name of the organizational unit was Sociology Documentary Department. László Remete was appointed as the first head of the department on 1st July, that was the date when the department started operating.
After long preparation, our library was assigned to be the national reference library in sociologyby a regulation created in 1968..In the 1960s Budapest Municipal Council and the Ministry of Culture asked renowned sociologists to survey the sociological holdings and services of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library; András Hegedűs was asked in 1964, Ágnes Heller and Iván Szelényi in 1966. The appointment was made partly by their interpretation.
In 2000, the department was named as Sociology Collection following the other special collections of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library. Due to the systematical work of librarian generations the sociology supply, that is the sociology collection as part of the library holdings, has been developed continuously since the establishment of the library (1904), and it is an integral part of the holdings of the Central Library.
