The Embassy of Brazil in Budapest and the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library are pleased to invite you to visit the exhibition "The Legacy of Exile 1933-1945: How Refugees Fleeing World War II Contributed to Brazil".

The exhibition is on display between 7 November and 1 December 2022 in the Entrance Hall of the Central Library (1088 Budapest, Reviczky utca 1.).

The exhibition was jointly organized by the Embassy of Brazil and the Stefan Zweig's House and is based on the successful TV series "Exiles" (Canto dos Exilados), directed by Leonardo Dourado in 2015, and on the images and biographical information in the "Biographical Dictionary of Refugees of Nazi Fascism in Brazil" (Dicionário Biográfico dos Refugiados do Nazifascismo no Brasil). The dictionary was published by the Stefan Zweig's House in 2021 and presents the biographies of 300 of the nearly 15,000 refugees who arrived in Brazil during that period.

This exhibition presents 38 foreigners, most of them European Jews, who have made an outstanding and lasting contribution to Brazil in the fields of music, photography, theater, literature, literary translation, economics, science, visual arts and even football. Of a total of 300, 12 came from Hungary, representing one of the largest contingents, after Germany, Poland, Austria, Italy, France and Ukraine.

The sub-exhibition entitled „The Contribution to Brazil of Hungarian Refugees who Fled World War II”, featuring 12 Hungarian refugees, can be visited until 16 December 2022 in the Small Gallery on the second floor of the library.

We hope that the exhibition will contribute to preserving the memory of those fleeing totalitarianism. To those who built a new life in Brazil and left behind a lasting cultural and human legacy.
