Violinist and music historian Zsombor Németh presents a series of educational concerts on 17th-century musicians. This time, he focuses on a lesser-known composer: Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber. Born in what is now the Czech Republic, Biber worked for a time in Olomouc, but his most significant works were composed while in the service of the Dukes of Salzburg. His violin sonatas, published in 1681, exemplify the stylus phantasticus—a style characterized by improvisatory, free forms, abrupt contrasts, and a bold expansion of the violin’s technical possibilities at the time.
