Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library continues to welcome visitors with normal opening hours and services
Although the most visited public library in Hungary needs to save money, it will continue to operate its services. As rising energy costs are placing a considerable burden on cultural institutions, many people want to know if there will be restrictions in the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library.
It is good news for the 275,000 active library users and for all citizens of Budapest, that the services will continue to remain available in the Central Library and all branch libraries, thanks to the disciplined and successful financial management of the institution and the Municipality of Budapest's support, with the exception of branch libraries, which operate in community centers, that have closed due to rising energy bills.

At the same time, the library maximizes energy savings through energy conservation measures, such as reducing the heating temperature and continuing the LED bulb exchange program. Additionally, the chandeliers of the Central Library's palace rooms will be temporarily switched off. Moreover, particular attention is given to saving in all other fields as well. The library remains open, continuously purchases novelties, and will also expand the range of subscribed databases for 2023. It does all this to help people who have limited budgets for culture and entertainment, or those who may need library services for their studies or recreational activities. The library monitors the needs of the library users and the changes in the study schedule of public and higher education institutions in Hungary, as well.
The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library had almost 1 million visits so far in 2022. Readers borrowed or renewed more than 2.4 million items, and the number of library documents currently on loan is more than 200,000.
These figures clearly show that there is significant interest in library services in the capital.
