The Theresatown Children’s Library first opened its doors in June 1961, as the capital city’s - and the country’s - one and only children’s library. The plan was to have this library as an example for other children’s libraries, so it gave practical, theoretical and methodological aid. As a library in the heart of the city center, it was very popular amongst the little readers, the librarians were ready with a lot of events for them and it also became an important place of learning.

In the 80s, we began opening more towards families and the number of group activities increased. The library had 4-5 school groups daily, and the sessions focused more on the school curriculum. To this day, we receive kindergarten and school groups, and the extra lessons are held in the closed library before opening.

Since the 90s, the library has gone through major changes. For example, the library catalog was digitalized, simplifying the search. Also, regular programs and colorful events make visiting the library more appealing. In the past few years, the library held many popular events, such as Thematic Months, “Tánc-lánc” sessions or “Baba-mama” (baby-mommy) Tuesdays. Besides these, we organized various crafts workshops and exhibitions, too.

The appeal also lay in the board games and plushies, so the families could spend their afternoons with game, as well as reading aloud and browsing books, even if we have no events in progress.

In the meantime, the appearance of the library left the 60s style behind and transformed into a magical forest. A lot of plants decorate the rooms and the previously mentioned games grew in numbers accordingly. There is also a stage/event area where we can hold our programs and activities. Behind the curtains stand green boards. The purpose of this is for the children to express their creativity and for them to spend their free time in a pleasant environment, which is inspiring, a safe haven from the concrete jungle.

On the loft you can find the pedagogical collection, which is continuously updated. Parents can also borrow books about raising children. On one end of the loft opens a teen room, where the teenagers (ages 12-18) can find their place to spend their free time.

This way, the children’s library can service kids and grown-ups alike, since we have adventure and humor books besides the picture books and fairy tales. Our collection also contains scientific literature, periodicals, CDs, DVDs, and since 2019 slide strips. Wifi and internet access is free on our computers.

All these make visiting the Theresatown Children’s Library a real family activity.
