What is a mandala?

The word mandala originates from the Sanskrit language, meaning circle, slice, disc, or arc. Some believe that its meaning is also related to the mind, as the word 'manas' means mind, which filters information that comes in through the senses.

A mandala symbolizes the universe, with its center representing the focal point around which all revolves.. The circle universally embodies unity and divinity, evident in the rose windows of Christian churches, while mandala creation was also integral to Indian religious rituals.

Across diverse cultures, mandalas assume symbolic significance, shaping individual perspectives Mandalas represent various aspects of the universe. In Asia, mandalas facilitate meditation and prayer, adorned with symbols aiding these practices. Within Hinduism and Buddhism, mandalas are revered for their ability to shepherd believers through universal metamorphosis. Entering the mandala and journeying towards its center symbolizes the path from eternal suffering to true joy and happiness—a labyrinth wherein enlightenment awaits the seeker.

Mandalas are sacred symbols utilized for meditation, prayer, healing, and art therapy.

They aid in cultivating tranquility and focusing the mind, acting as a tool for meditation and sanctifying space.

In certain instances, mandalas empower creators or meditators to develop unique abilities. Their symmetrical designs and rhythmic patterns synchronize the brain's hemispheres, potentially enhancing the radiance of both creator and observer, while also boosting overall energy levels. Mandalas instill a sense of security and comfort, promoting relaxation and rejuvenation, thus stimulating the body's innate healing capacities.

Classification of mandalas can be based on their origin, purpose, or composition.

The tradition of crafting yarn mandalas spans millennia across the globe, involving the methodical winding of yarn around a wooden frame. In regions where Buddhism is thrives, yarn mandalas are still crafted for spiritual purposes. Examples of thread mandalas have been discovered in ancient tombs, such as those in South America. While the name may differ, the technique remains consistent in various parts of Asia and North America. For instance, in Mexico, it is referred to as "the eye of God" and is regarded as a protective symbol.

Today, yarn mandalas have evolved into a contemporary art form, driven by their widespread appeal. While relatively lesser known in Hungary, our small team finds joy in creating and distributing these expressive and imaginative yarn mandalas.

The Yarn Wizards (Fonalvarázslók) team held its inaugural exhibition in Szombathely in 2023, and this year, in February-March, we showcased our work in Zalaegerszeg.

Our future objectives encompass presenting in various regions across the country and hosting a flagship Yarn Mandala Festival in 2026.
