It has been never debated (neither in his life, nor after his death) that Sándor Márai (original name: Sándor Károly Henrik Grosschmid of Mára) was one of the most significant figure of Hungarian literature of the 20th century. Even those who do not like him recognize the artistic value of his works, richness of thought and influence on crowds of readers. His work (his oeuvre) is high-quality art of writing, all he created are always interesting, written in elegant style.
The writer lived in the house at No. 2 Mikó street in the 1st district between 1931 and 1945. His attachment to the place (as his homeland) was expressed very nicely in his prose; however, he had to take his leave in 1945, his home was ruined by a bomb.
Then Sándor Márai soon boarded a train and went to the unknown, saying farewell to Hungary, his homeland, for good.
He lived in Switzerland, Italy, New York, San Diego; he could never separate from Europe; in every year he “came home” to Switzerland, Italy, France, Austria. His life and thinking remained every inch European; he set the freedom of thought before his own welfare. Readers like his works, there is always special interest in all of his published writings.
That was why we decided to give the name of Sándor Márai to our library in 2004, in the 77th year of its operation.
