Our Fellow Humans
A selection of portrait and human depiction studies from the Photography Department at the Secondary School of Visual Arts
„We draw inspiration for portrait-making from the eternal study of our fellow human beings. In them, we admire nature’s most beautiful creation, and they interest me at every age and in every moment of their lives.”
József Pécsi: The Art of the Photographer | The Light Publishing House, Budapest, 1916
The concept of the exhibition is rooted in the portraiture studies of students from the Secondary School of Visual Arts. The exploration of the photographic medium unfolds from multiple perspectives, where the delicate layers of narrative, experimentation, documentary, and archaic techniques find autonomous expression. Thanks to over a century of dedicated photographic education—driven by a rich teaching and creative program—the exhibition serves as a tribute to the life’s work of its founder, photographer József Pécsi. Through a complex interplay of archaic and digital techniques, it honors his legacy while embracing contemporary innovations. Building on the traditions of classical portraiture, the exhibition brings them into a modern context, revealing not only the external features of individuals but also their unique and unrepeatable personalities. The photographs go beyond mere representation; they depict relationships. At the heart of each image is the connection between the photographer and the subject. The true essence of these works, selected from the past decade, lies in the artists’ personalities and openness—their sensitivity, humility, respect for others, eagerness to learn, curiosity, keen observation, and deep visual understanding.
