Budapest's most impressive and unmistakably unique feature is undeniably the panoramic view of the Danube and the predominantly eclectic buildings that make up the city centre. The most outstanding architectural works which are officially recognised as part of the universal heritage of the world are usually nationally protected monuments. In addition to the iconic buildings, there are also a large number of locally protected buildings and complexes here. However, many of the houses built in more recent periods are still to be discovered.
Opening of the Exhibition Entitled "From Eclecticism to Brutalism: Architectural Assets Excavated in Budapest between 2017-2022"
Budapest's most impressive and unmistakably unique feature is undeniably the panoramic view of the Danube and the predominantly eclectic buildings that make up the city centre. The most outstanding architectural works which are officially recognised as part of the universal heritage of the world are usually nationally protected monuments. In addition to the iconic buildings, there are also a large number of locally protected buildings and complexes here. However, many of the houses built in more recent periods are still to be discovered.Since 2017, the Ordinance of the Municipality of Budapest on the protection of the townscape has made it possible to protect architectural assets identified during explorations initiated on the basis of special professional criteria ex officio in addition to external initiatives or relevant to specific areas. In recent years, the Urban Planning Department has taken advantage of this opportunity to carry out thematic research by examining buildings and ensembles of buildings to be preserved in the capital.
The results of the thematic research is presented in the exhibition entitled "From Eclecticism to Brutalism", which also aim to show the evolution of architectural styles over a period from the late 19th century to the early 1970s. The tables include eclectic buildings from the Great Boulevard area, industrial buildings from many parts of the city, exciting buildings from the interwar period showing a variety of stylistic trends, and works representing the evolution of architecture in the decades after 1945. The exhibition showcases around 100 buildings from the more than 340 that have been placed under protection by the Municipality of Budapest since 2017.
The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library and the Urban Planning Department of the Mayor's Office of the Municipality of Budapest cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition "From Eclecticism to Brutalism: Architectural Assets Excavated in Budapest between 2017-2022' on 2nd March 2023 at 5 pm in the Atrium of the Central Library.
A welcome speech is given by Dr. Péter Fodor, Director General of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library.
The exhibition will be opened by Zoltán Erő, Chief Architect of Budapest.
The exhibition is on view until 30th March 2023 during the Library's opening hours.
