Brazilian Book Club at the Central Library

Group photo from the meeting at the Central LibraryThe latest meetings of the Brazilian Book Club in Budapest were held at the Central Library of Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library.

The book club for adults is a community-driven reading group of the classic and contemporary Brazilian Literature formed by the Portuguese-speaking community in Hungary, including native Brazilian and Portuguese people as well as Hungarians who are learners of Portuguese as a foreign language. The book club focuses on spreading Brazilian literature in Hungary. The meetings are made monthly and the book for each month is decided by the vote of the members who participate in the in-person meeting of the club. Members can also suggest books to be read throughout the year.

The Brazilian children's book club is a reading project of Brazilian children's Literature books for children who have Portuguese as their heritage language and are located in Hungary. Their main goal is to stimulate children to read in Portuguese and present the most remarkable books of Brazilian children's literature, encouraging them to discover more about Brazilian culture through reading. The Brazilian children's book club is organized by two Brazilian women: Aline Schmidt-Zawadowski, a piano teacher, and Luma Miranda, a Brazilian Portuguese and Literature teacher, currently the Brazilian lector at ELTE.

The meeting of the Brazilian book club for children at the Central Library started with reading two Brazilian books for children on animals and insects. Afterwards, the children shared the stories that they themselves created such as small books and poems. In the meantime, handcraft was taught to the children: they could create a small book using craft paper. Lastly, each child was invited to present the story of a book that they brought from home to tell to everyone. After this moment, the children were free to choose any book of their interest inside the circle to either read it alone or with the help of their parents.
