MetszésPont Opens
Library community workshop and makerspace in the heart of Budapest.
On April 23, 2026, the Central Library of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library will host pop-up makerspaces and a panel discussion for those interested.
The MetszésPont (Intersection Point) community workshop and makerspace, set to open at the site of the former Study Space, aims to provide a space for the library not only for reading and learning but also for creation, experimentation, and community collaboration. Here, visitors can experience what the library of the future will be like - a place where ideas are not only born but also brought to life.
During the opening program, visitors can participate in creative sessions at various spots in the library, offering a glimpse of the workshops and creative events that will await them at MetszésPont in the future.
From 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 23, 2026, visitors can join a variety of creative sessions, including an origami workshop, a Bookish Merch workshop, “Paint from the Kitchen” (botanical painting), bookmark and badge making, knitting and crochet, and board games.
These activities will introduce the new creative space, engage visitors in collaborative creation, and provide an opportunity for everyone to try out the library’s new creative tools and offerings.
Workshop Titles:
- Book Saver - Making an e-book, tablet, or phone holder from an old book.
- Old Title, New Story - Giving a new life to a book spine.
- The Wonders of Knitting and Crocheting - Come and try it yourself!
- Bookish Merch Workshop - Magic from pages - Making badges and bookmarks from paper.
- Paper Craft - Folding between the lines. Origami from the basics.
- Jewelry Making with a 3D Pen.
- Paints from the Kitchen - Painting simple botanical patterns with natural homemade paints. During this workshop, there will be three paint-making demonstrations where participants can learn how to make paints even in the kitchen: at 5:15 PM, 6:15 PM, and 7:15 PM.
We also welcome our playful visitors from 5:00 PM with board games from the Board Game Club.
Participation in the event is free, and we welcome everyone - whether you're a regular library visitor or a first-time guest curious about the new space and services.
In addition to the workshops, at 6:00 PM on the same day, The Fabric of the City - a roundtable discussion - will take place in the Large Ballroom of the Wenckheim Palace, which houses the Central Library. The discussion will explore what the textiles around us can tell about the past and present of Budapest, and how an everyday pattern becomes a personal memory or a starting point for design.
The event also serves as the Hungarian launch of the Make-a-thek project, which is being implemented at the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library with the support of the European Union’s Horizon Europe program. MESZL is participating in the project as one of the nine selected European pilot libraries. The creation of the new MetszésPont community workshop and makerspace was made possible through its own institutional resources, the support of the Make-a-thek project, and the contribution of the Józsefváros Municipality.
Come and be part of the library’s expansion with a new community and creative space - where creation takes center stage alongside reading!
By attending the event, participants acknowledge that photographs and videos may be taken during the program and could be published on the library's website or Facebook page. Data management is based on voluntary consent. If you wish to object to the publication of your profile, please submit a written request.
