Enchanted Cats – Cat Set

White porcelain jugs and jars with catDear Reader,

You are warmly invited to the exhibition Enchanted Cats – Cat Set by Bernadett Kiss. The exhibition will be on view at the Dagály Street branch of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library from 10 September to 7 October 2024, during regular library hours.

"Objects made from kiln-fired clay, as well as beautiful and functional ceramics and porcelains, have fascinated Bernadett Kiss since childhood, influencing her career choice. After attending a vocational secondary school in Budapest, she studied object-making and design at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, followed by a Master’s degree in Visual Culture and Andragogy at the University of Szeged. She set up her own ceramics workshop in the former home of Kossuth Prize-winning sculptor István Bencsik, which is now part of the Pécsvárad Artists' House. There, she crafts her pieces by blending Eastern, historical, and modern European techniques, using kilns designed for porcelain firing. She also runs art education courses for both children and adults. Although mass-produced international products from industrial manufacturing are now common in homes, the tradition of unique, artistic creations has fortunately endured. Through her ceramics, Bernadett Kiss seeks to foster the appreciation and acceptance of new stylistic trends by merging functionality with meaningful, message-bearing elements. Her latest, useful, and fun objects, now being introduced, are not 'incomprehensibly modern' either. Bernadett Kiss's own favorite cat appears curled up with the pots - the shape of its paws helps grip the coffee cups, and the lid is cat-shaped. She would gladly create such lovely and cozy sets for those who similarly love their pets and appreciate the ever-evolving, experimental art of ceramics." -  says art historian Éva Csenkey.
