"Pass it back, bro!"

MESZL has become a collection point for used mobile phones: we joined the "Pass it back, bro!" campaign

The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library network joined with the Jane Goodall Institute, the KÖVET Society, the For Africa Foundation and the Preservation Society for the joint national campaign to recollect mobile phones. In the designated libraries you have the option to hand in your out-of-service electronic devices.

The goal of the campaign

The goal of the „Pass it back, bro!” initiative is to recollect and reuse the out of service mobile phones still lying around in Hungarian households. These devices contain many valuable metals - e.g. gold, silver, palladium or copper - which can be reused with the proper methods.

However, the extraction of the raw materials for the production of mobile phones creates a significant amount of environmental pressure. The mining of some minerals - e.g. coltan - in Africa endangers the natural habitats and continued existence of gorillas, bonobos and chimpanzees. Increasing the rate of recycling will decrease the need for new raw materials. This way we can contribute together to the protection of natural habitats.

Sustainability and environmentally conscious operation have always been high priorities for MESZL. Joining the campaign, our libraries take on an active role in the recycling of electronic waste and the reduction of the environmental pressure.

What kind of devices can you hand in?

In the designated collection points, we collect the following devices:

•    out-of-service mobile phones (feature phones and smartphones, as well),
•    tablets,
•    GPS devices,
•    and all their accessories (e.g. chargers, headsets, earphones).

Please make sure to put your devices into the box after you cleared them of all your data!
