Venue: MESZL Ötpacsirta Salon, 1088 Budapest, Ötpacsirta utca 4.
Date and Time: April 25, 2025, 6 PM

Nicola Matteis is one of the dark horses of 17th-century music history. He was born in Naples sometime around the middle of the century. For unknown reasons, he likely traveled to England around 1670, and after 1674, he made a name for himself in London as a violin virtuoso. Between 1676 and 1699, he published musical works – both instrumental and vocal – with great success, and also released a basso continuo method book. He was also active as a teacher. Toward the end of the century, however, Matteis seems to vanish from historical records. He is believed to have died in Colkirk, though – as with many aspects of his life – the exact date remains uncertain. What is clear is that Matteis played a key role in introducing the emerging Italian musical style and its distinctive violin technique to England – a legacy that notably influenced composers such as Henry Purcell. Matteis’s violin music, known for its rich harmonic language and dramatic use of double stops, bears comparison to the works of Arcangelo Corelli. His four published volumes of violin music stand as a testament to his popularity and the high regard in which he was held by his contemporaries.
