Bach Constructions and Reconstructions
Venue: MESZL Ötpacsirta Salon, 1088 Budapest, Ötpacsirta utca 4.
Date & Time: Friday, February 27, 2025, 6:00 PM

When exploring the oeuvre of Johann Sebastian Bach, we frequently encounter the concepts of transcription and reconstruction. Although both processes reimagine the original music through new instrumental arrangements, their goals are fundamentally different. Transcription creates something new from existing material, while reconstruction is a more in-depth musicological endeavor aimed at uncovering the "original" version of a work. This is done by examining later sources and applying tools of stylistic criticism. In our concert, violinist and music historian Zsombor Németh, along with members of the Simplicissimus Ensemble, will showcase these creative processes through selected trio sonatas by Bach.
Program:
J. S. Bach: Trio Sonata in G minor for oboe, viola, and basso continuo, BWV 76/8 and 528 (reconstructed by Pieter Dirksen)
J. S. Bach: Concerto in C major for violin, cello, and basso continuo, BWV 525 and 1032 (transcription by an unknown 18th-century composer)
J. S. Bach: Trio Sonata in D major for flute, violin, and basso continuo, BWV 1028 (reconstructed by Hans Bergmann)
