I have several nice memories of the Sociology Collection of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library. However, I have to admit  that I was not a permanent inhabitant of the library. My stations as libraries are concerned:  

Old reading room of periodicals of National Széchényi Library  which was located in National Museum, small reading room of the  Library of the Hungarian Parliament, later in National Széchényi Library again but in Buda Castle in a window-recess facing Tabán.   (I have never enjoyed the unfriendly atmosphere of the Library of Academy.) And now, the Library of the Hungarian Parliament again and the Library of CEU. (My favourite foreign libraries are not mentioned here.) And I liked the beautiful venue of the old sociology reading room (though it was a little shabby then), so I liked the office where we had good conversations with László Remete, Márta Bóna, János Báthory  (among others), not only about sociology.  By my memory, working relationship started with the books put in front of me by László Remete, 
saying that if I was  sitting there I should write file-cards to the bibliography of sociology history that was to be published.  

Then it continued by suggesting to János Báthory that the separate  sociological bibliography of persons should be published,  it was really supported by him. The series of Magyar Szociológiai Füzetek was developed by the the idea  (the bibliographies and biographies of Károly Polányi, Pál Szende etc). I am sorry  that the series ceased and I do not know the exact reason.  There was another connection between FSZEK (the library) and Osiris Kiadó (publishing company) that was Századvég previously. It would be called labour seduction (or invitation) today. The series mentioned above was typed by Ani Zséli, member of library staff;  she was the layout editor of the series, her upmaking was exemplary. Then I brought her over to the publishing  house as a typist, secretarian and (later) head of the office. I tried to weaken the personnel of the library this way, but unsuccessfully.   

The other thing to say does not belong to memories, it is the reality of these days. In the last few months I spent time with modernizing the holdings of open shelves in the Library of the Hungarian Parliament, expanding and 
updating historical literature and the literature of social sciences.  

Similarly to “project” like this, I  worked not only by own sources, but I tried to copy well-tried solutions; besides the libraries of Oxford I often visited   the Library of CEU (in Hungary); there was almost nothing to copy in other Hungarian libraries – except for  Sociology Collection. 

It was great to see  that the collection located on the open shelves of Sociology department  is quite rich and well-developed,  regarding not only Hungarian materials (which are outstanding) but the international part of the collection as well, in spite of relative impecuniosity.  Finally, I can say the same that was told by László Mátrai after 1945, when he was asked why he went to be a librarian: 

Times are coming when the library will be near (look alike) a library most of all.
Maybe, we feel the same.
