Reading books is good for your mental health

World Mental Health Day is a day of spreading awareness, a day of educating people. It was started in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health. WMHDAY is officially commemorated every year on October 10th. On this occasion, we would like to draw your attention to the most important mental health benefits of reading:

Reading is proven to reduce stress and increase relaxation

Research by Dr David Lewis showed that reading as little as six minutes a day can reduce stress levels by 60% by reducing your heart rate, easing muscle tension and altering your state of mind. That same study showed that reading was better at reducing stress than music, drinking a cup of tea, going for a walk and playing video games.

Reading books will help you escape your current reality

Reading provides an unparalleled opportunity to insert yourself in a different place and time. It allows you the freedom to remove yourself from wherever you currently are. To remove yourself from wherever the world currently is. Story-driven, fiction books put our minds at ease.

Reading helps alleviate depression symptoms

Reading fiction can allow you to temporarily escape your own world and become swept up in the imagined experiences of the characters. And nonfiction self-help books can teach you strategies that may help you manage depression symptoms.

Reading works your brain and prevents memory loss

An important study found that the rate of mental decline was reduced by 32% when people participated in reading, writing and other activities later on in life. While those with infrequent stimulating activity found that their decline was 48% faster than those with average activity.

Reading fiction increases your empathy and understanding of others

“When reading novels, we become better at understanding other people and their points of view,” says Keith Oatley, a professor of cognitive psychology at Toronto University. Reading fiction enables you to sample across a much wider range of possible people and come to understand something about the differences among them.

Reading indeed makes you smarter

“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
Studies indicate that reading regularly enhances brain functions. It allows you to think better, respond more efficiently to problems, make you a better speaker, and expand your knowledge and vocabulary. The culminating result is that you become smarter.

If you’d like to try reading more often, choose books that are of interest to you. No matter what type of book you choose, simply reading a few pages when you can is what counts.
