The former home of Dennis Gabor, physicist, 25 Rippl-Rónai street

The Rippl-Rónai street is a street ont he outskirts of Theresatown since the 1860s. The street was called Bakony from 1879, Bulyovszky street from 1885, and its current name was given from 1947.

The house under nr. 25 was the home of Dennis Gabor (Gábor Dénes), Nobel Prize winner physicist and the inventor of holography. The scientist was born on 5th June 1900, his family then called Günszberg. This family name was changed to Gábor in 1902, and they lived in the house until 1915.

This house stands on nr. 23 and 25., a few minutes away from Heroes’ Square. The connected building, which has a corner loggia, was constructed in 1898. The commissioner of the historic building, with neo-Baroque elements and an open yard, was Dávid Freiberger, who had a workshop of carpentry and locksmithing on Peterdy street.

The plans were drawn up by József Örömy, an architect born in Győr, who has buildings under his belt like the birth home of Antal Szerb on 15 Dák Ferenc street.
