Donation to readers of MESZL by the Embassy of Ireland

The Embassy of Ireland in Budapest donated 50-50 copies of James Joyce's  „Ulysses” and „A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” to Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library.

Donation took place for the reason that Bloomsday is celebrated on 16th June every year which is the most important day of Irish culture. This day they pay tribute to James Joyce, Ireland’s famous author. This year a global campaign is launched; everyone is encouraged to read books by James Joyce. As part of this “give Joyce a go” campaign the Embassy of Ireland, Hungary donated 100 books to Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library on 15 June.

The event took place in the Central Library on 15 June; Dr. Péter Fodor, Director General of Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library received the donation from Ambassador Ronan Gargan and Marianna Szegedi Joó, Culture Attaché. Erzsébet Gy. Németh, Deputy Mayor of Budapest participated in the event and she gave a speech as well.

The Hungarian peculiarity of Bloomsday feast means unique connection between Hungary and Ireland because Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of James Joyce’s Ulysses, is Hungarian by birth.
